Stair Lifts

Stair Lifts

A stair lift is a machine that is usually fitted onto a steel rail running up a set of stairs. The machine has a built-in chair which moves along the steel rail going up and down the stair railing. A wheelchair stair lift can make all the difference in dealing with disabilities, injuries, arthritis or anything that may stop you from being able to comfortably negotiate a set of stairs.

Getting a stair lift is a good idea if you experience pain when using stairs. An electric stairlift allows the user to simply sit in a chair and be taken up and down the stairs. A stairlift can climb up and down nearly every type of staircase, and can negotiate steep staircases as well as normal ones. A home stair lift can enable you or a loved one to go to parts of the house that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Before purchasing a stair chair lift, there are a few things you should consider. First, you will need to know what kind of stair lift you require. There are two basic types of stair chair lifts: a straight lift and a curved lift. A straight stair lift goes up and down straight stair sets whereas a curved stair climber can go round corners and curves in stair sets. A curved stair lift will take considerably longer to build and install than a straight one because the stair lift will need to be custom built. A straight stair climber; however, can usually be installed on any straight staircase within a matter of hours.

Generally, an electric stair lift is made up of a seat with arm and foot rests that are pulled up and down the stairs by cables which move along on small rollers that are placed on the rail that goes up the side of the stairs. A good wheelchair stair lift will have a seat that can swivel out to allow easy access on and off the stair lift. Furthermore, a platform stair lift can assist those who are confined to a wheelchair by replacing the chair apparatuses with a platform (also referred to as a wheel chair stair lift).

Choosing an Electric or Battery Powered Stair Lift

Electric or AC powered stair lifts used to be the most popular. They are directly connected to a main power supply through a trailing cable. It generally runs on a 110 to 115 grounded VAC outlet. At the top of the stair is a spring-loaded drum that stores the cable. Its main advantage is being free from the hassle of changing and charging batteries. This is very important when you expect to use the stair lifts regularly or when more people are likely to use it. Also, AC models are usually cheaper than battery powered stair lifts. The major drawback, however, is the dependency to power connection. If your geographic area is prone to experience frequent power outages, an electric stair lift may not be the best choice. AC models are also more prone to irregular stop and start motions, which may cause discomfort. The cables that an electric stair lift uses may also pose a threat of someone tripping over them.

Battery stair lifts (also known as DC stair lifts) are operated by a battery that will need to be recharged after a certain period of usage. There are DC models that provide charging stations anywhere on the trail or at both ends of the rail. The best thing about battery powered lifts is that you can use it anytime you want without worrying if a power outage or blackout may suddenly occur. It offers a smoother ride compared to AC models and is also quieter - this can make a big difference for people with delicate health conditions. The main disadvantage is the time and effort you have to exert in charging the batteries. This can be problematic if there are multiple people using the stair lifts.

The most important thing to consider when choosing which type of stair lift to purchase is the need and requirements of the people expected to use it. The health condition of the user(s) should be also taken into account, as should the frequency of use. After that, it will be easier for you to decide if an electric or battery powered stair lift is right for you.
